So Conservative MP Brooks Newmark has resigned as Minister for Civil Society because a Sunday newspaper was about to publish a story alleging that he had sexted a naked photo of himself to what he thought was a young woman but who was in reality a male reporter.

He should have been sacked weeks ago over a far more serious matter: his part in the government's attack on civil society organisations earlier this year, and his remark that charities should “stick to their knitting” and stay out of the “realm of politics”.

He has admitted he has been "a complete fool" over the sexting.

His real foolishness was the knitting comment. The government's foolishness was in appointing him in the first place.
