The report rightfully urges the government to tighten its controls over arms exports that might be used for internal repression. UK weapons have been used for internal repression in places such as Egypt and Bahrain.
Andrew Smith from Campaign Against Arms Trade said: We welcome moves to restrict the arms tradeand agree that the government isn't going far enough. When UK sells weapons to oppressive governments it doesn't just give them military support, it also indicates political support."
The Chairman of the Committee, John Stanley, has written to the Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond, to raise his concerns about UK arms sales to Russia.
Andrew Smith continued: "It is hypocritical for the government to talk about human rights while UK companies sell arms to authoritarian leaders like Putin. The issue goes wider than Russia, with the dictatorships in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates all being identified as 'priority markets'.”
