Britain's Foreign Secretary and actor Angelina Jolie have taken some flak for their trip to Bosnia to meet rape victims, and there may be more criticism of celebrity causes when they co-chair the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London in June.

But the topicality of the meeting "to create irreversible momentum against sexual violence in conflict and practical action that impacts those on the ground" has been reinforced by two London theatre productions: the first was Nirbhaya, which was provoked by the rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi in 2012, and the attack on her partner. The second, which opens this week, is Birangona: Women of War, a 55-minute performance that addresses the atrocity of the 200,000 women raped during Bangladesh's fight for independence.
